The old clock on the stairs by Taylor, William Ladd, 1854-1926

I love how the title focuses on the clock you can barely see and not the ghost wedding party right in front of it.

This is like titling the Mona Lisa “A River and Some Hills” or The Last Supper “A Long-Ass Table”.

My interpretation of it is: the artist could only see the stairs and the old clock (for ghosts are mostly invisible) and only after the paiting was done did he see what else he managed to capture on canva. You know, like an old photograph… Hence the title. He did not see the ghosts at first.
