One Gifset per Fairytale [13/?]The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (“Nussknacker und Mausekönig”, Germany, 2015, part of “6 auf einen Streich” series)
This adaptation is based on the story of the same name by E. T. A. Hoffmann.
Other adaptations of the fairytale include: The Nutcracker Prince (Canada, 1990), Barbie in the Nutcracker (USA/Canada, 2001), The Nutcracker in 3D (UK/Hungary/Canada, 2009) or the upcoming Disney’s film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (USA, 2018).
I can’t even tell you how much I love this adaptation. In a way it reminds me of the animated Nutcracker Prince, but this version is both darker and more romantic. Also, the romance actually works much better here since Marie and the Nutcracker are in their older teenage years*. Definitely worth a watch, even if you (like me) don’t speak German.
*The original novel is kinda gross in that respect because Marie is literally seven and gets married in the end – but I understand that the book is supposed to be a wish-fulfilment
fantasy of a little girl who saves her “prince charming” and becomes a queen.
